What exactly are ushers in a wedding?

This may sound like a stupid question. I'm only a freshman, though! I'm working on a wedding project and the checklist is asking how many bridal attendants, groomsmen, and ushers would be attending. I have five for the first two, but I don't know what ushers are, exactly. Help?
