Is it ok just to excuse yourself and hang up on rude individuals?

In MY opinion, you handled it perfectly. You shouldn't have to deal with someone being a bi*ch because she had a bad day or nobody told you what was going on. BUT, (there's always a 'but') you should probably be prepared for the fact that if she reports this to anyone, she's going to tell HER side of the story and it won't be good for you. Best thing to do, if it goes any further, is to remain calm and polite the whole time.
