Horse jerks his head back when bridling.. what to do? (Points)?

You might just want to be a little slower and more careful when you are fooling around his ears. A horse can be perfect with his ears and be taught to be funny with them by doing nothing but being a little too careless when working around them. I would begin by leaving the halter on and tie him where he has slack unless he pulls up or back to where it makes it difficult for you to finish bridling. Just bridle over the halter, making sure that you are being extra careful when you get around his ears. He may pull up and or back the first few times, out of habit...then should learn that he doesn't have to avoid you when you come at his ears with the bridle. I would do this for several times, leaving the halter on while you are riding him. When you dismount, hook him back up to the lead rope while you are removing the bridle. Pay special attention while removing the bridle, being careful not to ruffle his ears or get in a hurry and pull the headstall off his ears roughly. Once he learns that he can trust you around his ears, he should stop this bad habit. Now, if it's just a bad habit, that should fix it...but, he could also have mites or ticks in his ears or even a slight ear infection that needs attention. If you examine closely with a flashlight (standing on a stool) you should be able to tell if that is the problem...mites are hard to see, so if the problem exists, mite powder can be sprinkled like baby powder into his ears. I know that others have suggested getting your vet to look at him...of course that is good advice, but I ume that you already knew that was a good option and was asking for suggestions from others that didn't include a vet bill.
